It's cold outside, but the students at Orrington and Park are keeping warm by playing drama games! At Orrington, primary classes are exploring pantomime and improvisation with Snow Play, Wax Museum, Saying Hello, Animal Transformations, and other fun experiences. Intermediate classes are challenging their thinking and creativity as students transform into characters during Bus Stop and I Got This Present for You. Over the next few weeks, in preparation for the Brother hood assembly in February, fifth grade students will focus on several Langston Hughes poems. Through movement, pantomime, tableau, and improvisation we will develop an understanding of his work and create movement pieces about it. This should be an exciting process!
At Park we have been using stories to drive our creative process. We warm up with yoga and gentle stretching, experience free movement with music, create a dramatic response to a story, wrap it up with parachute games or free movement. My goal is to provide sensory experiences and opportunities for every student to participate and engage.

The Drama program for the 2015-2016 school year has gotten off to an amazing start. I have enjoyed working with the over 400 talented students at Park and Orrington schools. The District 65 Drama program is process driven with students immersing themselves in the elements of drama rather than focusing on perfecting a final performance. Students have participated in story and narrative drama using tableau, pantomime, transformation and improvisation. Creative movement has been fostered through drama games and interpreting pieces of music. When in the role of audience, students have been working on providing constructive feedback in the form of verbal reflection - a critical piece of process drama. Have a wonderful winter break and I look forward to working with everyone in 2016!
